Cobra Film was established by directors Dragan and Goran Bjelogrlic as a creative outlet for film during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. At a time in Serbia’s history when culture was largely ignored by official institutions, a group of artists rallied around Cobra Film as a means of protesting the conflict. The company’s first production was the 1994 theater show My Darling, followed by its most successful film to date Pretty Village Pretty Flame (1996), directed by Srdjan Dragojevic.

Cobra Film specializes in the production of feature films and television series. The company has a professional staff of four and plans to expand its capabilities as a theater distribution service. Cobra Films sells DVDs of all films and television series it produces.

Credits

1994: My Darling, the most successful theater production of the year; 90,000 spectators and 200 performances.

1996: Pretty Village Pretty Flame, the biggest independent film project in the history of the Yugoslav film industry and the most successful block-buster of the past 20 years. The film had 700,000 spectators in the former Yugoslavia, 70,000 in Slovenia and 50,000 in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In 1996 and 1997, the film won several awards at film festivals in Stockholm, Sao Paolo, Thessaloniki, Fort Lauderdale, Moscow and Paris. France’s Canal+ bought world distribution rights for the film, which was screened in over 50 countries.

1998: The Wounds, a co-production with France’s Canal+ and Germany’s Pandora Film. Screenings and Awards:
  • Film of the year in Yugoslavia (450,000 spectators).
  • First Serbian film that screened in Croatia (the most viewed movie in 1999) and Bosnia (30,000 spectators)
  • The film was viewed by 50,000 spectators in Slovenia and 30,000 people in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
  • The film received two grand-prix awards in Stockholm and a Fipresci award in Thessaloniki
  • The film was screened at Toronto, Sundance, Berlin and Ljubljana film festivals
  • Canal+ sold distribution rights to the film in over 20 countries

2000: War Live; More than 300,000 spectators saw the film across the former Yugoslavia. Screenings and Awards:
  • World Premiere in the Competition Program of the 36th KARLOVY VARY 2001.
  • Special Jury Award: Panorama of European Cinema: Athens 2001.
  • Festivals: Cologne 2001, Malta 2001, IFF Bergen 2001, IFF Ljubljana 2001, IFF Stockholm 2001, IFF Bratislava 2001, IFF Palm Springs 2002, IFF San Jose 2002, Film Festival Oldenburger 2002, Film Festival Wisbaden 2002, IFF Seattle 2002, IFF Philadelphia 2002: Award for best director, IFF Moscow 2002.
  • Rex Media (L.A.) sold the film to: Italy, Russia, USA, and Thailand.
  • War Live was nominated for an Oscar in 2002.

2003: Small World (Mali Svet), by Milos Radovic. Cast: Miki Manojlovic, Lazar Ristovski, Branko Djuric, Ana Sofrenovic, Irena Micijevic-Rodic.
Festivals:
  • IFF Sarajevo, IFF Zagreb, IFF Warsaw, FF Cotbuss, IFF Ljubljana, IFF Sofia, IFF Skopje, IFF Sochi, IFF Brooklyn.

2005: Ivkova Slava, by Zdravko Sotra, Cast: Zoran Cvijanovic, Dragan Bjelogrlic, Milorad Mandic, Srdjan Todorovic, Anica Dobra, Natasa Ninkovic, Velimir Bata Zivojinovic. Over 600,000 spectators viewed the film in Serbia and Montenegro. The film was also screened in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia, Austria and Canada.

2007-2008: The Stork will be Back (television series), directed by Goran Gajic; Cast: Dragan Bjelogrlic, Srdjan Todorovic, Nikola Djuricko, Branimir Brstina. The series premiered on TV B92 in Serbia.

2009: In Preproduction: Someone Else’s Blood (feature film) directed by Pjer Zalica.
