Mountain Avala is situated 18 km from Belgrade city center providing panoramic view as the surrounding area of lowlands. It stands at 511 meters (1,677 ft) above sea level. Besides the rich animal life, the Avala is known for its diverse plant life with over 600 plant species including rare trees and medical herbs. Woods mostly consist of durmast oak, Turkey oak, hornbeam, beech, linden, black pine and black locust. The mountain top features Monument to the Unknown Hero, hotel Avala and two mountain homes.
